The house that hurt you doesn’t get to define your worth.
You survived…You get to write the rest of your story.
(Holiday Survival Edition)
Before we dive in…
If just seeing the word family makes your chest tighten… This is for you.
If going “home” feels like volunteering for emotional warfare… This is for you.
If you learned early that safety isn’t a birthright… This is for you.
You are not the common denominator of the harm.
You are the one who crawled out of the fire they lit.
Let’s be clear from the start…
Nothing about your body responding to danger is wrong.
What’s wrong is that the world expects you to pretend it’s fine.
This Season Isn’t a Hallmark Movie
Holiday culture screams…
“Be grateful!”
“Make the most of your time together!”
“But they’re still your family…”
Translation…
Perform love. Ignore harm. Swallow the truth.
For trauma survivors, especially those with complex trauma and attachment wounds…
This time of year isn’t cozy.
It’s panic wrapped in glitter.
It’s masking like your life depends on it.
It’s being shoved back into a role you escaped.
Your nervous system remembers what everyone else insists on denying…
This isn’t safe. Don’t make me go back.
And then they look at your fear like you are the problem.
Get this through your sacred, survival-wired nervous system…
Your caution is intelligence.
Your distance is self-respect.
Your refusal to pretend is liberation.
Let Me Be Blunt
Family dysfunction doesn’t magically transform into love just because someone hung lights on a tree.
Surviving your family doesn’t make you:
- Broken (Nope!)
- Dramatic (Absolutely NOT!)
- Disloyal (Fuck NO!)
- “Too sensitive” (NAH…sensitivity is beautiful anyhow.)
Survival in unsafe systems isn’t dysfunction…
It’s fucking genius.
Your nervous system protected you when the world wouldn’t.
Honor that wisdom.
You’re Not Broken.
The environment was unsafe.
Every symptom you hate?
Every reaction you judge?
Every shutdown, alarm bell, meltdown, dissociation, rage-burst?
Those were solutions
when you were trapped in a house that demanded you abandon yourself to survive.
You adapted.
You outlasted.
You are the proof of resilience no one ever wanted to acknowledge.
That is badassery rebellion disguised as distress.
